How Chance the Rapper put himself a position for success and what we can learn from it

How weg the Rapper put himself a position for success and what we can learn from itHow weg the Rapper put himself a position for success and what we can learn from itmglichkeit The Rapper is a bonafide celebrity.Hes one of the most popular artists out there right now. His music binnenseems to be universally loved and listened to. Hes built a massive following of loyal listeners that freak out as soon as any new music of his comes out, even if its just an unproduced sample of an early version of Waves from Kanyes The Life of Pablo. How do I know that? Because Im one of those fanatics of course. New Chance is like Christmas over and over again. At the end of the day, hes put himself a fantastic position for success. The crazy part?Chance The Rapper has never released a single album. Now some will argue that his recent hit project Coloring Book was an album he was simply calling a mixtape, but the reality is Chance doesnt make music with the intention of selling it. In fact, hes never sold a single track. Everything he creates is made available for free. From his breakout mixtape Acid Rap to Coloring Book. Theres no gate. Theres no paywall. Theres no pay-to-listen at all. Its all up for your enjoyment on Soundcloud. Why would he do this when he could easily make millions selling albums? The answer is actually quite simpleA loyal following is mora valuable than a handful of one-off sales.Yeah, Chance is incredibly talented and couldve gone the conventional route of signing with a label, producing great music, then selling it all, but he wanted to bet on himself. If he could build up a loyal following of people interested in Chance himself, not just his music, hed be able to monetize it in on his own terms.Hed also be able to take a much larger cut than the traditional artist would selling albums. As Future of Music found, most artists are only seeing 5% to 15% of each sale. Everybody wants their cut, leaving the artist with far less than they probably deserve. So now th e question is thisAs a marketer, what lessons can you learn from Chance The Rapper and his strategy?Lets dive in1. Provide massive value for freeChance is huge on the mixtape method. Give away free content to build up a larger fanbase and prove his talent to the world. This mixtape method applies to more than just music. If you give away something valuable for free, people will notice and theyll be grateful. If you hide behind paywalls and gated content, people will also notice and be far less likely to care about you at all. Most of the people who come across you or your business have no idea who you are. They dont know if youre credible. They dont know if you actually know what youre talking about. They have no proof of your credibility or quality. You havent shown them a thing.Considering that, would you really expect them to open up the wallet right away? Probably not. Your chances of getting that conversion are slim. What if youve already given them some sort of premium content fo r free or a free sample already? Now that conversion is looking far more likely. Youve now proven your credibility. Theyve seen what you can do and they like it. All of the sudden that cold sales ask is far warmer. This is what we marketers call the mixtape method.Hustle Grind co-founder Ross Simmonds dropped a post talking about content mixtapes not too long ago thats definitely worth a read.Chance has embraced the mixtape model and its paying dividends. He gives away his music online to warm up the sales ask. When it comes time for concert tickets to go on sale, his fans cant get theirs quick enough. As a marketer, if youre giving away premium value in blog posts or free resources, when you finally start opening sales for premium content, a course, an event, or pretty much anything, your potential customers already know youre legit and the sales process will be much smoother.2. Build up a loyal followingIf you continue to provide immense value for free, people will start to genuine ly like you. After all, everybody likes getting something valuable for free. Now not only will your lead magnets convert better and allow your email list or social following to grow even more, but that email list and social following will be full of people who actually care about you and want to hear from you.Of course, a savvy marketer like yourself knows that as your list grows, so does your monetization potential. When youve got a massive list, youll be able to make more sales. When that massive list is full of people that like you, youll make even more sales.Chance has almost 7 million followers on Instagram alone and a personal brand thats off the charts. Just imagine the endorsement deals coming across his virtual desk. You can provide some major value through Instagram and build up a following of your own if you understand how to do it right. If youre ready to start, check out this advanced guide on Instagram growth to help you get the tanzerei rolling. The bottom line is thisLo yalty leads to long-term success.Build up a loyal following and you wont have to rely on one-off album sales like some artists. Youll have people that keep coming back for more.3. Embrace your story and its authenticityWhen it comes to building that following, dont be afraid to be you. That authenticity will go a long way in helping you keep your followers engaged long-term.Chance the Rapper will always be Lil Chano from 79th, no matter how big he gets.Hes a real person that posts videos of him goofing around with his daughter on Instagram. Hes not afraid to step back from the spotlight and show his true colours. In fact, its that authenticity and transparency that continues to help him build up his brand. His followers get to see him as Chance Bennett the person, not just Chance the hip-hop mogul. Sure, his fans love his music, but they also love him as a person. That personal connection will make your audience like you for you, not just what you do.Embrace that authenticity and sta y true to who you are. You dont need to fake it.4. Feature industry leaders to increase reachDont get caught up thinking you need to do it all on your own with no help from anyone else. Its possible to make it on the back of talent and hustle alone, just look at J. Cole and Russ. They dont do features. Its all them.Featuring marquee industry leaders will help you increase your reach.Think about itOn the very first track of Chances Coloring Book, he featured Kanye West. All the sudden, Kanye and his fanbase want to check it out. If they like it, theyll keep listening. On the second track, hes got Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz featured. Now the two of them are going to help promote the mixtape and sell their following on it.Keep going through the mixtape and youll find features from Jeremih, Young Thug, Lil Yachty, Justin Bieber, Future, T-Pain, Ty Dolla $ign, Anderson Paak, and more. Just like that, Chance has an army of high profile artists with a horse in the race. They want to help him pr omote the tape because every listen helps their brand as well.On the flip side, Chance knows that getting himself featured on other projects will have a similar effect. For some Chance fans, the first they heard of him was on Ultralight Beam from Kanyes The Life of Pablo. That one feature has helped him one-up his loyal following.Hes jumped on tracks from Big Sean, DJ Khaled, John Legend, Action Bronson, Macklemore Ryan Lewis, Kyle, Childish Gambino, and a ton more. When each and every one of those songs gets listened to, Chance is being heard and his fanbase is growing. How does that apply to the marketing world?Featuring top influencers and guest posting on top publications will help your brand significantly. If you plug an industry leader in your blog post, you can now reach out to them and ask if theyll give it a share. If they do, your content is now being seen by everyone who follows them and listens to them.Similarly, if you can get your content featured on a popular publicat ion like Forbes, everyone seeing that content now knows youre on the map. If its high quality, they might check you out. Over time, those guest features will help you build up your following and increase your influence.5. Creative freedom is a big dealSince Chance isnt signed to a record label, he gets to create what he wants to create, and what his fans want to hear.Theres no label owner telling him how hes going to sound. If Chance likes how orchestral music sounds in the background, Chance makes a song with orchestral music in the background. If his fans go crazy over a certain sound that hes producing, hell produce more of that sound.Creative freedom helps you maintain your authenticity as well. If your audience can tell youre just towing a company line with every word you say, theyll be gone real quick. After all, people like other people, not just company logos and admins publishing the content.Dont get me wrong, Im not saying you need to quit your job today and start writing whatever you want to write. Im just saying you need to seriously look at the language youre using and the tone youre rolling with.Does it seem forced? Is it awkward and overly corporate? Is it dry and boring? If yes, fix it. Creativity and authenticity are key to keeping your audience engaged. Just like how Chance creates what he knows his followers are into, you can do the same. Build up an understanding of your target audience and make sure your marketing efforts match up with what they want. Its time for you to step up to the plate and put the Chance marketing methods in place. Hes carved out a huge chunk of the hip-hop industry, and its been done mainly through behauptung 5 core ideas. Whether or not he knows it, hes a brilliant marketer. So just as a quick recapDont Be Afraid To Go Against The GrainChance is gambling on himself and turning down a $10 million offers with record labels to maintain his creative freedom and independence. So far, its paying off big time.Just because some thing doesnt seem conventional, dont be afraid to run with it. If no one ever challenged the status quo, thered be no such thing as innovation.Create Mixtapes Instead Of Just SellingFocus on value first and foremost.Dont try to take right away. Give first, build up your own loyal following, then monetize in the future when you have a list of people who dig what youre doing. Youd be surprised how far a handful of free resources can take your lead generation effortsStart HustlingChance works hard. He works very hard. If you want to become a successful marketer, you need to embrace the hustle. Stay focused on the strategy, but always be willing to put in the work.If youre looking for some daily motivation, check out Hustle Grind on Instagram. Every single day theyre sharing the content you need to see to keep you focused on the hustle.Josh Gallant, Digital Marketer Avid Chance The Rapper Fan.This column originally appeared on Quora.com.

Writing a Compelling Cover Letter to Make You Sound More Human

Writing a Compelling Cover Letter to Make You Sound More HumanWriting a Compelling Cover Letter to Make You Sound More HumanWriting a Compelling Cover Letter to Make You Sound More HumanFew people in the world today understand the importance of writing a compelling titelbild letter. Many assume that a cover letter is only a redundant document repeating what has already been said by the resume. Unbeknownst to them, the cover letter subtly or otherwise reveals certain aspects about the job seeker that are not apparent from the resume. It, therefore, behooves any serious job seeker to make an effort to write a compelling cover letter that exudes some personality and that is engaging enough. Here is howcourtesy of C.Lavery unsplash.comShow ExcitementIf your cover letter doesnt reveal that you are super excited to take up the vacancy, or if it looks like you deem the new opportunity as some drudgery and a necessary evil, then more than likely your precious write up is going to end up in t he bin or in the shredder. No employer likes entrusting pivotal online resume writing services to dispirited and unmotivated employees. You have to show why youd prefer this particular job with this particular company over other jobs and other companies out there. It has to be clear right off the bat that you intend to and can excel in your would-be occupation. It is not a summary of your resumeMany folks make the fatal mistake of assuming that the cover letter is a truncated version of the resume. It isnt true. What you need to know is that you should try as much as possible to include in the cover letter new information that isnt on the resume- for example, you could briefly and amusedly speak about your work habits, personal traits, reason for interest in the job opening, or a reference to feedback from a former manager, etc.Give vanity a wide berthIt is funny how nave some job seekers can be. For instance, some make anecdotal statements such as you will not find a job candidate be tter qualified than me. Such statements are both ignorant and arrogant, and, in most cases, they only help the recruiter put on a contemptuous sneer before pushing aside your documents. You dont know if you really are better qualified than the rest therefore, leave the determination of that to the hiring manager. Read your cover letter again before sending to ensure it doesnt sound like some infomercial.PersonalityThere is a myth out there that a cover letter should be formal. Granted, there is nothing wrong with a formal cover letter however, the best cover letters out there are warm, friendly, and conversational. They are engaging and sometimes humorous. But dont be overly casual. As a rule of thumb, give slang a wide berth, and take care that your grammar and spelling is alright. There arent hard and fast dictates about writing a cover letter just be yourself and let your personality show.Discard the canned cover letterYou should write a fresh, unique cover letter for every job application. Just resist the temptation to use one cover letter for every application you make. Recruiters often possess a knack of telling out a canned cover letter from a letter specifically written for the specific job. What to do if overqualifiedPeople assume that the only impediment to landing their desired job is being underqualified. The truth is that being overqualified is just as much an obstacle as being underqualified. First off, employers are likely to think that overqualified applicants may not be enthusiastic about the job position therefore, it is imperative you mention your qualifications and assure them that you are still comfortable and enthusiastic about the job you are applying for.Once you do all these, you are likely to land that plum job you are eyeing. There is no doubt about that.

7 Tips to Get Hired Fast

7 Tips to Get Hired Fast7 Tips to Get Hired FastWhen youre looking for a job, your goal is likelyto get hired sooner rather than later. But with so many variables seemingly out of your control, it might feel like youre at the mercy of the job search gods to get a gig. Fortunately, there are ways to potentially speed up the process and get hired fast. Here are seven tips that can help you get hiredfast1. Be selective.Logically, it might seem that the more jobs you apply for, the better your chances would be of getting called in for an interview, but thats not necessarily the case. When you focus on quantity (and not quality), your job applications could just be generic and not pack the punch necessary to impress a potential employer.Instead, try to be selective in the number of job listings you apply to, and then make koranvers that your resume and cover letter are tailored with the job descriptions in mind.2. Do some volunteering. With bills piling up during your job search, the last t hing you might want to do is work for free. Thing is, volunteering is a great way to get hired fast Not only can volunteering give you new skills, but it can also be listed on your resume as solid work experience (which is good when youre trying to cover up some employment gaps on your resume).Plus, the new networking contacts you can potentially make while volunteering just might connect you to an employer thatis hiring3. Try temping.Much like volunteering, temping can put you on the fast track towards getting a job. Temping is a good option for those looking to earn some money while still focusing on their job search. A temp job can be listed as work experience on your resume, and your boss can also give you a fresh reference as well.Temping is particularly good for career changers who are looking to test out the waters of a new career field without making a full commitment. Plus, being able to get your foot in the door might possibly lead to future job opportunities within the co mpany.4. Prepare for the position.Although it might seem like youre putting the cart before the horse if you prepare for a position that youve yet to be hired for, youre not. If youre looking to get hired fast, you can adopt the mentality that youve already accepted a job offer. That means preparing yourself- both mentally and physically- for the job, especially if its a remote position.Whether you plan to work from a home office or become a digital nomad, make aya you have what you need in order to work remotely successfully. That means having the space, equipment, and other necessary tools and programs that will allow you to work at your peak.5. Use. Big job search boards can be akin to a buffet- lots of choices, but most arent what youre looking for, anyway. If you want a flexible job, you can save time by not having to weed through lots of job listings that arent relevant to your needs, and use a credible, niche job search board- like- instead.Since every job is hand-screened fo r legitimacy, you can be assured that there are no job scams, and that each position has some level of work flexibility.6. Spread the word.Sure, you spend your days focused on looking at job listings, but dont forget to reach out and let people know that youre actively pursuing work options, too While you can (and should) go to networking events, let friends, family, and former colleagues and bosses know that youre looking for a job. Be as specific as possible, since well-meaning connections might try to pair you up for a position that you have absolutely no interest in.You can say, Im looking for a mid-level marketing job, and then give them a brief synopsis of your skills and/or employers youve worked for so your contacts can hopefully create quality leads.7. Be flexible. Lets say that youre looking for a full-time remote job. If you want to get hired fast- and your job search has been going on longer than you had hoped- it might be time to rethink your job search parameters. You might opt for a part-time remote job, or perhaps a few freelancing jobs, or a combination of flexible jobs.Being flexible can provide some much-needed income, additional experience for your resume, and depending on the work flex your job offers, the additional time to continue your original job search while working simultaneously, too.Start Your Job SearchPhotoCredit bigstockphoto.com

Job Interview Weakness Used to Your Advantage

Job Interview Weakness Used to Your AdvantageJob Interview Weakness Used to Your AdvantageThis dreaded, seemingly trick question will no longer be difficult to answer in job interviews. Five things I wish Id known when I finished high school

Five things I wish Id known when I finished high school 5 Things I Wish Id Known When I Finished High SchoolPosted April 10, 2013, by Jo MesserFinishing high school can be an exciting but also daunting experience. Looking back on my own transition from school to university, I realise everything I could have done differently. Id like to share a few things Ive learned since then through my own and other students experiences, to give you insight and to help you realise that you arent alone out there if you have no idea what to do after high school1. Most people dont know what they want to do when they finish school its normalLike many students, I didnt actually know what course I wanted to do after Year 12, despite getting good marks. At the time I thought I was the only one in the world going through this dilemma However, the fact is that fruchtwein students dont know what they want to do when they finish school, and those that do are in the minority. If youre not sure, thats ok. At 1 7 or 18, how can you be expected to know what you want to do for the rest of your life?Nothing is set in stone. Career change statistics suggest that the average person will make a career change approximately five to seven times during their working life. This means there is not just one job you will do, but many. With our constantly changing work practices and technology, you might have a job in the future that doesnt even exist nowAs your experiences broaden you will start to realise what you like and dont like to do through trial and error, so be prepared for a journey of lifelong learning. The most important thing is to be open-minded, motivated and willing to learn2. Your marks dont define your course or career choiceDont let your choice of further study be solely determined by your HSC results. Consider your motivations and interests and do not let your marks sway you from what you really want to do. I constantly counsel students who have finally admitted to themselves that th ey chose their course because they had the marks when they really wanted to do something quite different. It is very rare to come across a student who is strong and individual enough not to get swayed by their marks or the prestige associated with an occupation. One of the people I admire most is a friend of mine who had the marks to get into any course she wanted but she chose to stay true to herself and become a kindergarten teacher. She is a phenomenal teacher, full of passion, and any child who is lucky enough to have her as a teacher will remember her for life Even if you dont get into uni, its not the end of the world. The question you really need to be asking is why do I want to do this course? Think about your reasons and try to be as honest with yourself as possible.3. There is more than one road to the same destinationStudents may be disappointed when they get their results. There is a whole range of reasons why people might not achieve their best results at high school and this does not mean they wont be successful. Just look at Richard Branson, a high school drop-out who had dyslexia and was a lousy student. What Branson demonstrates is that hard work, drive and determination are the essential elements to success.Getting good grades will give you more options upfront, but in the long run no one but you will remember your marks and they will not define who you are and what you will achieve for the rest of your life. There are many different pathways to get to the same destination. Missing out on a course doesnt mean the dream is over. You can look at alternative pathways, single subject enrolments, starting in another course then transferring, or completing an undergraduate degree then undertaking postgraduate study. You might choose to work and then take on further study as a mature-aged student. There are many different combinations and permutations and in Australia we are fortunate to have access to a diverse range of study and training options.4. You need to be aware of what your influences areWhen I look back on finishing Year 12, I now realise I was scared stiff of leaving the security of high school. I had had a positive experience and good friends, and didnt want to face the big wide world on my own. My choices were influenced by who I knew and which university they were going to, and other factors such as my parents and erroneous preconceptions about courses and occupations. When I counsel Year 12 students I find it is very common for students to go for a course or institution largely based on where their friends are going or how far it is from home. Ive come to realise that most young people dont know any different, so how can they imagine a world beyond their own life experience?Sometimes the best course for you is not the one at the most prestigious university or the one your friends are going to. Its important to consider the learning style that suits you best and what people currently in the profession recommend as the best study program for what you want to do. Take the time to stop, reflect and discuss the factors that are influencing you.5. If you take a year off, use it wiselyI deferred my first year of study because I didnt know what I wanted to do. During that time I did work experience, volunteered and got a casual job. The year flew past, and at the end of it I knew a little bit more about the world of work, my skill set and what I didnt want to do. But I hadnt gotten any closer to the answer I was so desperately looking for. When I think back on my gap year, I put way too much pressure on myself to find out exactly what I wanted to do.If you take a gap yeardont think you will suddenly have a great epiphany and necessarily know what you want to do with your life Having time out from study can be a wonderful growth experience, but think about when is the right time to take that year off and make sure it is for the right reasons. Do something that will enrich your life.Your learning neve r endsYour learning does not conclude at the end of high school, nor at the end of a degree or even when you get your first job. In fact, thats only the start The road ahead will be full of twists and turns, and sometimes the destination will be clear while at other times it might feel like youre going in circles. There will be many opportunities for gaining new knowledge and skills, for changing direction and ultimately for personal growth. This is what a career and life is all aboutGoing to university soon? Tips for Writing a Resume Profile

Tips for Writing a Resume ProfileTips for Writing a Resume ProfileSome hiring managers recommend that job applicants begin their resume with a resume profile instead of an objective. But whats the difference, and why might one be better than the other? A resume profile is a brief summary of an applicants skills, experiences, and goals as they relate to a specific job opening. On the other hand, a resume objective states the type of position that the applicant is seeking. Essentially, a profile is a very condensed version of a deckblatt letter. Without restating your entire CV, it matches your qualifications to the job requirements. The intention is to show the hiring manager quickly and convincingly that you are the best person for the job. A resume profile is also referred to as career summary, personal profile statement, profile statement, resume summary, or summary of qualifications. All refer to profiling your key qualifications for the job on your resume. Benefits of Using a Profile A resume profile offers applicants a way to stand out among the hundreds of resumes that companies receive. Most employers spend only a few seconds looking at a resume, and much of this time is spent looking at the top half of a resume. Therefore, even if employers only read your profile (located directly beneath your heading and contact information), they will still have a clear idea of your unique qualifications. In addition, your profile can include resume keywords that will help your application get picked up by the applicant tracking system that many companies use to screen applications for job openings. Resume Profile vs. Resume Objective Stating an objective on your resume is a way to convince employers that you know what you want in a job, while a profile explains what you have to offer the employer and can help sell your candidacy. Another option is to not use either and simply start your resume with your most recent work experience. Some employers prefer resum e profiles to resume objectives, but its up to you to decide which works best for your resume considering your work experience, skills, level of position, and qualifications for the job for which you are applying. For example, while an objective might state, Experienced English teacher seeking position at independent school, a profile might state, English teacher with 10 years of experience in independent school systems. Success in developing creative teaching strategies to achieve passing grade levels on statewide exams. Unlike the objective, the profile answers the question, What can this applicant offer the employer? Tips for Writing a Resume Profile Keep your profile concise. A resume profile should be between one and four (brief) sentences long. You can write your profile as a short paragraph or in bullet form. Focus on the job listing. In your profile, only include the skills and qualifications that relate to the specific job for which you are applying. A profile is partic ularly helpful if you have a work history that is unrelated to your current career goals- it allows you to highlight only your most relevant experience. Focus on the future. A profile serves to show what you have to offer an employer- what you will do for the company in the future. Look at the job listing for insights into what the company is looking for in an employee. In your profile, explain how you will meet the companys expectations. Does a sales director position require someone who can improve the companys sales record? Your profile may state you are an Accomplished sales director with success in developing strategies that have generated 6- and 7-figure revenue growth. Explain what you have done as a way of showing the hiring manager what you can and will do if they hire you. drehort matters. Its important that your resume objective is listed where an employer can see it when they first review your resume, so list your profile at the top of the page, above your work history. Resume Profile Examples Its always helpful to review samples to get ideas for your own resume. Here are sample resume profiles for a variety of job openings. When writing your own profiles, try to integrate your employment history and skills into the qualifications listed in the job posting, so you appear, at first glance, well qualified for the job.

Recruiting College Hires and Tuition Forgiveness Programs

Recruiting College Hires and Tuition Forgiveness ProgramsRecruiting College Hires and Tuition Forgiveness ProgramsRecruiting College Hires and Tuition Forgiveness Programs Chinsky MatusonStudent loan debt can crush college hires.College seniors who graduated in 2011 owed an average of about $27,200 in student loan debt, according to Mark Kantrowitz, Vice President of Advanced Projects for Monster. Add in loans from parents and the amount owed rises to $34,400.As a result, college students are increasingly stressed about their first job, which can impact the recruitment of much-needed new hires. This may lead to college graduates choosing jobs that pay better over jobs that are a better fit for their career aspirations, says Kantrowitz.A Response to Student Loan DebtThe news about college hires and student tuition debt is particularly troublesome for those trying to fill positions in industries like healthcare hiring as well as with IT hiring for HITECH,where demand continues to outpac e supply. In the public sector, some hospitals and schools are tapping government-sponsored tuition forgiveness programs to assist new hires. For example, teachers who qualify can reduce their student loan debt through the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program other public occupations might qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. If you want to attract talented college graduates to your organization, then you have to appeal to what motivates them as job seekers, states Kantrowitz.Tuition Forgiveness Programs Judy Fix, RN, MSN, Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and Miller Childrens Hospital Long Beach, knows the challenge of recruiting college hiresinto hard-to-fill positions first-hand.Under Fixs leadership, the organization partnered with California State University Long Beach to increase the number of qualified nursing candidates. In exchange for a two-year work commitment, participants in their program receive reimbursement or dir ect tuition payment, based on the California State University or University of California tuition rates.Students enrolled in our program are given a stipend that allows them to cover costs associated with their schooling, says Fix. Students from private institutions can apply as well.Fix notes that the rates set for forgiveness are based on California State University or University of California tuition rates. The medical center informs participants in advance that the IRS will see the stipend as income, which could affect any other loans or grants they might be eligible to receive.Since its inception, we have brought in 600 registered nurses through the program. Weve been able to recruit the best and the brightest, states Fix. The Tuition Forgiveness program has made a tremendous difference in the stability of our staff and the quality of our hires.Tuition Loan Forgiveness via a Signing BonusSarah Cullins, President of Rancho Cucamonga, California based Finesse Staffing, finds the idea of tuition forgiveness programs intriguing.Recruiting qualified IT people who are exactly what you are looking for is challenging. For companies who are looking far into the future and planning ahead, this is a great way to secure talent before someone snaps up the fresh grads. For employers who need new hires now, this solution wont necessarily work unless employers provide signing bonuses as part of their tuition forgiveness bonuses. All other things being equal, anything extra you can do for your current and future employees will build loyalty. If you invest in them now, they will be more apt to stay in the long run, notes Cullins. She believes forgiveness for college hires is the perfect way for forward-thinking companies to differentiate themselves from the pack when recruiting college hires.Retaining New HiresSome employers might worry about the fickle nature of younger hires. What if they decide to leave before they have worked off their commitment? We have a strong relatio nship with our participants and a good track record for getting reimbursed, states Fix. Re-payment is pro-rated if someone leaves before fulfilling his or her two-year obligations. We make arrangements for payments if a student doesnt fulfill their end of the bargain. The medical center also provides nurses with a healthy bump in their nursing salaryat the end of the two-year period to encourage workers to continue their employment.Kantrowitz sees tuition forgiveness programs as a great way to keep payroll costs to a minimum. Its not a long-term cost, because at the end of the agreed upon time period, you are not adding more money to your payroll, year after year.He adds, These types of programs are a great solution for the mismatch between the job skills of seekers and the needs of available positions. Loan forgiveness programs can encourage people to pursue the necessary training. At the end of the day, tuition forgiveness programs provide better trained employees who feel a connecti on to the organization. Then again, what college graduate wouldnt be attracted to a firm that invests in their people? 2012 Human Resource Solutions. The 3 Basic Strategies of Closing a Sale

The 3 Basic Strategies of Closing a Sale The 3 Basic Strategies of Closing a Sale One of the hardest lessons for new salespeople to learn is the importance of closing every sale. The close doesnt have to be as difficult as it seems. If you did a good job of presenting the product and responded to the prospects objections, the close follows naturally. However, if things didnt go quite so smoothly, you may need to give the prospect a bit of a nudge to successfully close the sale. Here are a few strategies which may help when the simple approach fails. The Assumptive Close The assumptive close is the most generic and the one to use if you havent been able to fit the prospect to a more customized close. After making the presentation and answering the prospects questions, ask a question that assumes your prospect is about to buy the product. Here are a few examples:? Would you prefer red or blue? Our standard delivery can have this to you by Tuesday, or will you need our rush delivery option? Will ten units do for a start?I can get you a 10% discount if you pay for a year in advance, would that work for you? Will you be having fries or onion rings with your meal? OK, you probably wont use that last one very often. It shouldnt be too difficult to come up with a handful of similar assumptive questions that fit your product(s) or service(s). The Time-Limit Close This is a good one to use if your prospect utters the fatal phrase “Id like to think it over first.” Pause for a beat, then nod thoughtfully and say something like this: “I can certainly understand your wanting to think about this, but I want to let you know now that the model youd like is a popular one and were usually understocked. Id hate for you to be stuck with a model thats not as good a fit just because this ones not available tomorrow!” Or mention a discount that will expire in two days or a promotion such as a gift with purchase thats about to end. Of course, this only works if such a limitation exists â€" never lie to a prospect! You may be able to work with your sales manager to come up with limited-time offers to use if you dont have company-wide ones. The Custom Close If youve qualified the customer well, youve probably gathered a lot of information about their preferences (color, size, features, quality level, the amount theyre ready to spend, etc.). When youre ready to close, look at your notes about the prospects needs and say something like this: “So, you need an LCD TV thats big enough for everyone in the living room to see clearly, that costs not more than $500, and youd prefer it in silver. Are there any other features youd like?” Wait for the prospect to answer, then assuming they say no smile and say... “Luckily our XCL 5560 is a perfect fit for you! It has all those features plus it comes with our advanced sound system, and its yours for just $399. All I need is your signature and Ill have it delivered right to your home by the end of the week.” Still smiling, hand over the contract and point out the signature line. Since youve already accounted for everything the prospect says they want in a TV, its unlikely theyll back out now. If the prospect does hesitate at this point, he likely has some unresolved objections. Youll need to find out what they are and help the prospect overcome them in order to close the sale.

Job References How to Format and Present Them

Job References How to Format and Present Them Job References How to Format and Present Them How do you deliver job references to an executive recruiter or hiring manager? To start, remove ‘References available upon request’ from your resume. You’ve got glowing references. How and when do you put them in front of an executive recruiter or hiring manager? Do you send them along with your resume? Do you walk into the interview with a prepared list of references to call? The first thing most job seekers need to do is delete the phrase, “References available upon request” from their resumes, said Mary Schumacher, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders. “I don’t think any resume needs this kind of statement,” she said. “It’s a cliché and not necessary to include.”Beyond that, the rules are similar to resume-formatting guidelines: Use standard file formats and fonts, save files using keywords, and don’t lie, said Schumacher, Steven Van Vreede and Dan Dorotik, also certified professional resume writers who work with Ladders. How to forma t and submit job references:File format: Save the file as a Microsoft Word or PDF document, separate from your resume.File name: Save your references document as either “Professional References,” “(Your Name) references” or simply “References.” Branding consistency: To ensure your references look and feel like the rest of the documents you’ve submitted for a job application, resume writers recommend taking a cover letter and saving it as a new document titled “References” or something similarly descriptive.Cut everything but the header, which contains your name and contact information, Van Vreede suggested. “This way, a job seeker will have a consistent, branded framework for their resume, cover letter and references, giving them a more professional appearance.”Reference information: The list should include at least three references, preferably from your most recent employers. Include name, title, company, business address, e-mail and phone (optional).Make sure contact information is current.Print it: Print several copies of the reference list (in case you are interviewed by multiple people) on high-quality, ivory or white resume paper for an interview, Van Vreede said.Post it: Schumacher noted that many people have references right on their LinkedIn profiles, as quotes from bosses or customers. LinkedIn makes it easy to request recommendations simply by e-mailing those in your network; just click on Recommendations on LinkedIn’s menu. When to submit: Provide references during the interview phase.Submission exceptions: Submit before interviews if you’re in a field where it’s required, such as education, or if specifically asked.

Why you need a time machine to make big decisions

Why you need a time machine to make big decisions Why you need a time machine to make big decisions Knowing the right thing to do provides no advantage unless you actually do it. Our research on scaling uncovered all too many teams and organizations where people were well aware of the pitfalls ahead and could list the steps required to spread some brand of excellence as an organization or change program expanded. Yet they still screwed-up and failed to act on what they knew â€" often suffering from a deadly combination of illusion, incompetence, and impatience, symptoms of what my co-author Huggy Rao and I call a “scaling clusterfug.”Nobel winner Daniel Kahneman’s favorite approach for making better decisions can help you and your team avert such fiascos. This might sound weird, but it’s a form of imaginary time travel. It is called a “premortem.” Kahneman credits psychologist Gary Klein with inventing the premortem technique and using it to help many project teams avert real failures and the ugly postmortems that often follow.A scaling premortem works something like th is: When your team is on the verge of making and implementing a big decision, call a meeting and ask each member to imagine that it is, say, a year later. Split them into two groups. Have one group imagine that the effort was an UNMITIGATED DISASTER. Have the other pretend it was a ROARING SUCCESS. Ask each member to work independently and generate reasons, or better yet, write a story, about why the success or failure occurred.Instruct them to be as detailed as possible and, as Klein emphasizes, to identify causes they wouldn’t usually mention “for fear of being impolitic.” Next, have each person in the “failure” group read their list or story aloud and record and collate the reasons. Repeat this process with the “success” group. Finally, use the reasons from both groups to strengthen your scaling plan. If you uncover overwhelming and impassable roadblocks, then go back to the drawing board.Premortems spur people to use “prospective hindsight,” or, in grammatical terms, to think and talk in “future perfect tense.” So, instead of thinking “We will devote the next six months to spreading patient-centered care,” travel to the future and think “We will have devoted six months to spreading patient-centered care.” Now comes the critical element: You imagine that a concrete success or failure has occurred and look “back from the future” to tell a story about the causes. For example, in 2001, Xerox CEO Anne Mulcahy and her team wrote a make-believe 2005 Wall Street Journal article about the company’s resounding success. This mock article listed performance metrics and quotes from experts about the specific steps that Xerox had taken to achieve a stunning turnaround during the prior four years. This “look back from the future” motivated and guided them over the coming years as they brought back Xerox from the verge of bankruptcy and transformed it into a viable company.Pretending that a success or failure has already occurred †" and looking back and inventing the details of why it happened - seems almost absurdly simple. Yet renowned scholars including Kahneman, Klein, and Karl Weick show that this approach generates better decisions, predictions, and plans. Looking “back from the future” helps people overcome blind spots, especially to bridge short-term and long-term thinking (a hallmark of successful scaling, as I discuss in this earlier LinkedIn piece). Weick shows that it is far easier to imagine the detailed causes of a single outcome (such as a horrible failure) than to imagine many possible outcomes and try to explain why each might have happened. In addition, analyzing a single event as if it HAS already occurred rather than pretending it MIGHT occur makes it seem more concrete and likely to actually happen, which motivates people to devote more attention to explaining it. Indeed, experiments by Wharton Business School’s Deborah Mitchell and her colleagues showed that prospective hindsight, or imagining that an event has already occurred, “increases the ability to correctly identify reasons for future outcomes by 30%.”Looking back from the future also dampens excessive optimism, especially if the imagined outcome is a failure, mediocre, or falls just short of being as wonderful as expected. Kahneman and many other researchers have found that most people overestimate the chances that good things will happen to them and underestimate the odds they will face failures, delays, and setbacks. He adds “in general, organizations really don’t like pessimists” and when naysayers raise risks and drawbacks, they are viewed as “almost disloyal.” Klein’s research and work with leadership teams indicates that premortems undercut the “damn-the-torpedoes attitude often assumed by people who are overinvested in a project.” In the hands of a skilled facilitator, a premortem creates a competition where members feel accountable for raising obstacles that others haven†™t. Klein says: “The whole dynamic changes from trying to avoid anything that might disrupt harmony to trying to surface potential problems.”As well-orchestrated premortem can also shatter illusions that everyone on a team concurs with a decision that is about to be made or that everyone believes an effort is going well and will continue to do so. Powerful and overconfident leaders often reward people who agree with them and punish those who are brave enough (or perhaps dumb enough) to disagree with their delusions. The resulting corrosive conformity is evident when people don’t raise private doubts, known risks, and inconvenient facts.Klein describes a premortem with a Fortune 50 company where a senior executive imagined that a billion dollar environmental project had failed because the CEO who championed it had retired â€" and the new CEO wasn’t committed to the project’s success. This possibility had never occurred to the CEO was pushing the project. Similarly, when Hug gy Rao ran a premortem with an executive team that was on the verge of launching a company-wide innovation project, the Senior Vice-President in charge admitted the team had just raised numerous roadblocks and “ticking time bombs” that they never had mentioned before â€" even though they had been planning the rollout for months. In a proper premortem, voicing such impolitic bad news and risks is safe, expected, and encouraged. Finally, in addition to imaginary time travel, another way to reduce the risk of scaling culsterfugs is to pretend that, rather than working on your own scaling project, you are coaching someone else. Ask yourself and your team something like “If you were advising another team in the same situation you are in right now, what would you tell them?” Harvard’s Max Bazerman demonstrates that people are less prone to irrational optimism when they make predictions about the fate of others’ projects or businesses rather than their own. Bazerman observes tha t, when it comes to home construction or renovation projects, most people estimate that their friends’ projects will run 25% to 50% late and over budget. But those same people estimate their own projects will be “completed on time and near the projected costs.”The world needs dreamers and their dreams. Without them, there would be no new and wonderful inventions and there would never be any inspired new ideas to spread far and wide. But dreams of what is possible are best balanced with hard facts and realistic projections about what is probable. Looking back from the future and imagining that you are giving someone else advice increase the odds that the dreams you choose to chase do, in fact, come true. This  article  first appeared on LinkedIn.

8 Things to Do If You Havent Job Searched in Years

8 Things to Do If You Havent Job Searched in Years 8 Things to Do If You Havent Job Searched in Years Looking for a new job can be a daunting prospect for anyone, but if youve been out of the workforce for quite a while, the idea of seeking employment can be downright terrifying. Many people find themselves in exactly this position, however, as they attempt to re-enter the working world after years away to care for children, deal with a personal or family health crisis, pursue additional education, or follow a dream. Fortunately, you can take a few simple steps to get back into the swing of things. Here are eight suggestions to consider if you need a job but havent job searched in years: 1. Start with some research. If you havent been looking for a job in years, you may be surprised at some of the changes in the marketplace. Take a few minutes to learn about the latest resume trends, brush up on your job search habits, or figure out how to talk to employers about your time away from the office. The blog is a good place to start, as it offers many resources and tips to help you get up to speed on todays employment market. 2. Update your resume. The resume you used five years ago isnt going to cut it now. Dust it off and make it better. For example, if you gained additional education or training while you were out of the workforce, emphasize that. If you completed relevant volunteer work, explain your duties and accomplishments. Refreshing your resume is definitely worth the time and effort. 3. Use your network. Getting your foot in the door with employers, or getting them to take a chance on you and interview you, is one of the hardest tasks if you have an unusual career path or a resume with some gaps, says an article from Career Sidekick. And when somebody who is trusted by an employer introduces you directly or recommends you for a position, the employer immediately trusts you a lot more. While this doesn’t guarantee they’ll hire you, it definitely boosts the chance you’ll get interviewed. 4. Treat your job search like a full-time gig. When you havent been on the job for a while, you may be a little rusty in your personal best practices related to work. Treating your hunt like a job will help you rediscover those skills. Set your hours, follow a task list, send out lots of resumes, and do everything else youll do once youre back at work. 5. Hone your skills. If you didnt stay up to date with your industry while you were out of the workforce, now is the time to pursue online courses, certifications, or other educational opportunities. Treat this as one of the daily tasks of your job search. As you complete courses, add that information to your resume and mention them in your cover letter. Employers will want to hear how you improved your skill set during your time away. 6. Embrace flexibility. This may mean exploring remote or part-time positions to get a toehold with a company you love, but it also may require other tough decisions. If you’re holding out for the perfect position and it’s been more than six months, it’s time to switch tactics and consider things you would not have before, says an article from Ladders. Be willing to look outside of your city and outside of your network for jobs, even if this means switching career fields or taking a lower-level position. While you may not want to move for a job, it’s important to think of necessity: go where the jobs are, and once you’re in a secure position, you can strategize your next step from there. 7. Offer meaningful ideas to potential employers. Some managers are hesitant to hire people who have gaps in their resumes. If you include specific plans for how you can help their businesses in your cover letter or an interview, you can overcome some of that reticence. Demonstrate your value and work ethic to an employer by offering meticulous and creative solutions to problems, says an article from Learnthat.com. Don’t go into an interview with an aim to correct the employer, but show that you have an awareness about what issues the company might face, and show them what you can do to offer a solution. 8. Ooze positivity, in person and online. You will get frustrated, anxious, and maybe even angry as your job search proceeds. Thats to be expected. But dont let negativity creep into your conversations with others. Instead, make sure people who speak with you at networking events or communicate with you in cyberspace come away with a positive impression of your enthusiasm, skills, and experience. This can be difficult when youre feeling down, but it can also help you find the job you want. And the sooner you secure a position, the sooner your job search will be over. These suggestions may boost your search, but its still likely to take awhile to get back to work. Be diligent, stay patient, and maintain your focus. Remember: youve done this before, and you can do it again. BROWSE OPEN JOBS

Inaugural HPVC India Event is a Resounding Success

Inaugural HPVC India Event is a Resounding Success Inaugural HPVC India Event is a Resounding Success Inaugural HPVC India Event is a Resounding Success Pedocker, the entry from the Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad (far left), leads the pack at the HPVC India endurance event. The team placed third in that race, but was the overall winner of the three-day competition. Photo by Michael Moorhead, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The first ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC) to be held in India was an unqualified success, with more than 400 students and 36 teams from more than 30 universities turning out for the competition. For more than 30 years, the ASME HPVC program has provided engineering students with the opportunity to demonstrate their skills at applying sound engineering design principles while developing sustainable and practical transportation alternatives. The HPVC India event, which took place Jan. 17-19, 2014, at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi, consisted of a design evaluation on Friday, followed by a double-elimination drag race speed competition on Saturday and two-and-a-half hour endurance event on Sunday. HPVC India was co-hosted by Delhi Technological University. At the end of the three-day competition, Pedocker, the entry from the Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad, emerged as the overall winner. The team placed second in the speed event, third in the endurance event, and fourth in the design category. Rajarambapu Institute of Technologys entry, ArcK, took second place overall, placing first in the endurance event, third in the speed event, and sixth in design. Jamia Millia Islamias Flare, the winner of speed event, finished third overall. ArcK, Rajarambapu Institute of Technology's entry, took third place overall at HPVC India. Photo by Michael Moorhead, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Michael Moorhead, Chair of the Human Powered Vehicle Challenge Committee and Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, characterized the inaugural HPVC India as a wildy successful event that far exceeded his expectations. When we originally started we thought wed call it a success if it had 10 or 12 teams that participated, because we never know what an international event is going to look like, said Dr. Moorhead, who attended the competition with six students from his institutes human powered vehicle team. So when we had such great participation, that was the first indicator of success for us. But then getting through the weekend and actually executing the event just as well as we do in the U.S. was just fantastic. It was just much better than I ever would have expected it to be. Human Powered Vehicle Challenge Committee Chair Michael Moorhead (second from left) reviews the rules of the competition with the HPVC India student participants. Photo by Crystal Hurtle, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. According to Moorhead, the HPVC Committee has been interested in establishing an event in India for the past several years. Historically there have been a few teams from India that have tried to come to the United States for the U.S.-based HPVC events, and its always a real challenge, he said. Most of their effort is directed at the logistics of actually getting over here, and most of their money is focused on air fare and lodging. And it hurts them in the long run. Weve been saying for years that wed like to have an event in India, but we needed to find a cooperative host. That happened this year with IIT Delhi. Moorhead, who is also the faculty advisor for the Rose-Hulman HPVC team, was especially impressed with IIT Delhis commitment to the project. They did a phenomenal job, he said. It was one of the best-organized events in the U.S. or elsewhere that weve ever seen. They clearly wanted to put on an excellent event. The competition in India was the first of four HPVC events that will take place this year. HPVC East will be held April 11-13, 2014, in Orlando, Fla. HPVC West will take place in San Jose, Calif., from April 25-27, 2014. An HPVC Latin America event is also planned for Mexico City in October.
